The top Dutch cyber specialists from government, businesses and knowledge institutions met this morning at The Hague Security Delta Campus for the official opening of the second edition of the Cyber Security Week. The message was loud and clear: with economic losses amounting to € 10 billion as a result of cybercrime in the past year, cyber security is one of the most urgent issues of today. Our digital resilience should be high on everyone’s agenda and this requires sufficient numbers of trained cyber security and IT-talent.

VarmX, a Dutch, Leiden based biotech company focusing on the development of therapies in the field of hemostasis and thrombosis, today announced the publication in Nature Communications of a ground breaking LUMC study(1) on modified human factor X as a safe and effective reversal agent for prevention and treatment of bleeding in patients taking factor Xa oral anticoagulants. This new therapeutic factor X was inspired by a snake venom protein, and is the lead product in development of VarmX, a pharmaceutical LUMC spin off.

Hercules Pharmaceuticals receives investment from UNIIQ for the development of cancer immunotherapy

Hercules Pharmaceuticals, a Boston University spin-off company, currently located at the Leiden Bioscience Park, will receive a € 300,000 investment from the UNIIQ investment fund for the further development of its lead compound, an immunotherapeutic for different forms of cancer. The investment was announced at the UNIIQ Live event by Ivo de Nooijer, director of LURIS, the Technology Transfer Office of Leiden University.

Human Metabolome Technologies chose Leiden for its European office

Japanese firm Human Metabolome Technologies (HMT) has chosen Leiden for its European office and started operations July 1st 2017 at the Leiden Bio Science Park. This biotechnology company develops capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry (CE-MS) based metabolomics technologies and solutions to drive drug discovery, diagnosis, and food production. At the opening ceremony HMT’s CEO Mr. Ryuji Kanno and Managing Director Mr. Tsutomu Hoshiba were presented a special plaque from Mayor Henri Lenferink to mark the occasion. The Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Hiroshi Inomata also gave a brief speech during the official opening ceremony.

Australian space startup Fleet expands into Europe with Dutch office opening

Australian space startup, Fleet, is expanding it's operations to Europe by establishing an office in Dutch space hub, Delft. The move comes as Fleet readies to launch the first of its 100 strong nanosatellite constellation in early 2018. Fleet is building a nanosatellite network to deliver connectivity for the internet of things for free.

A Green Deal for the Dutch Windwheel 2.0

On 29 June, the Windwheel Corporation presented its new designs for the Dutch Windwheel, the icon of technological innovation that will raise the skyline of Rotterdam to a new aesthetic level. In addition to the presentation, a Green Deal was signed at the World Trade Center in Rotterdam by Minister Kamp, Provincial Executive member Bom-Lemstra (Province of Zuid-Holland) and Alderman Struijvenberg (Municipality of Rotterdam) which will increase the Dutch Windwheel’s chances of realisation.
