Phospho scales biomedical animation from Rotterdam’s Van Nelle Factory

Story

Phospho Biomedical Animation, a pioneering visual science communication company, has relocated its headquarters from London to the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam. The move marks an important milestone in its scale-up journey and reflects the company’s ambition to grow within one of Europe’s most vibrant Life Sciences & Health regions.

From cancer research to science communication

Founded in 2014 by Dr. Jeroen Claus, a former cancer researcher, Phospho was created to help scientists share their work more effectively. By translating complex concepts into clear animations and visuals, the company has become a trusted partner for academic institutions, biotech firms and pharmaceutical companies across Europe.

“I’ve always known Rotterdam to be a city embracing design, technology and innovation. It feels like a perfect fit for us.”

Why this region?

Rotterdam offers the right mix of ingredients: a strong HealthTech cluster, a dynamic research and industry ecosystem, and fast connections to the Netherlands and the UK. “I’ve always known Rotterdam to be a city embracing design, technology and innovation. It feels like a perfect fit for us,” says Claus.

Opportunity for growth

With its strong base of creative and animation talent – supported by institutions such as Breda University of Applied Sciences – and a growing science communication network, the region provides fertile ground for Phospho’s next phase of growth. As Claus explains: “Visual communication of science remains an under-served niche in Europe. We see a real opportunity to collaborate with local talent and institutions here.”

Support in the landing process

InnovationQuarter, together with the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA), supported Phospho’s landing in the region. The relocation was further facilitated by InnovationQuarter, Rotterdam Partners and Rotterdam Square, who helped with practical matters and introductions within the LS&H community. “These organisations have been excellent in helping us connect with the sector in Rotterdam and Zuid-Holland. It made the move much smoother,” Claus adds.

Looking ahead

In the coming years, Phospho aims to establish itself firmly in the Dutch Life Sciences & Health ecosystem, while continuing to build on its UK collaborations. With its new base in Rotterdam, the company is well-positioned to expand and strengthen the role of biomedical animation in communicating groundbreaking science.
