Car parks are often just that—a space to park your vehicle. But in a densely populated country grappling with climate change and the urgent need to switch to renewable energy, that’s a missed opportunity. With Energy Ports, CEO Wouter de Roos has developed a three-in-one solution: solar carports.

Solar carports produce clean energy, manage rainwater efficiently and provide safe, comfortable parking. “It’s a no-brainer”, says Wouter. “We have to make smarter, more versatile use of the space we already have, especially in a country where space is at a premium.” Energy Ports’ scalable, low-tech design is ideal for businesses, municipalities and organisations looking to use their parking space more sustainably. In this way, solar carports make a significant contribution to the energy transition.

From overlooked to centre stage

Wouter previously worked at solar panel specialist Enstall. After the company was sold, he turned his attention to an often-overlooked opportunity for solar energy generation: carports. He reconnected with Flexibell Systems, a company that had once developed a carport system, and suggested they join forces. A third partner soon came on board: BOAL Group, a leading supplier to the greenhouse horticultural sector. In 2023, they combined their expertise to launch a new joint venture: Energy Ports.

Patented and properly waterproof

The company has developed a patented, modular solar carport system designed specifically for large-scale parking areas. Inspired by greenhouse construction, the structure uses bifacial solar panels. “Thanks to our patented rainwater drainage system, we are the only provider that can guarantee full waterproofing”, says Wouter. The system is sturdy, practical and easily adjustable in both height and size, making it suitable for a wide range of vehicles. It operates without complex electronics and can be effortlessly integrated with features such as EV charge points. The result is a scalable solution that cleverly combines efficient use of space with renewable energy generation.

Listening closely, refining the value proposition

Like many startups, Energy Ports’ growth path is not linear. Although interest is high, getting projects off the ground takes time. “Investors want to see quick returns”, Wouter explains. That can be difficult when the real value only becomes apparent in the long term, once the solar carport is operational. By listening closely to customers and continually refining its value proposition, the startup is adapting to that reality: “That’s how we’re steadily building our market position.”

Nuclear energy, wind farms… these are controversial topics. But solar roofs on car parks? No one argues with that.

A market in motion

The company operates in a rapidly evolving market, which is not without challenges. For installers, resellers and other supply chain partners, solar carports are still a relatively new concept. That is why Energy Ports often takes on full project management, from groundwork through to installation. Regulations also vary from country to country, requiring additional coordination and specialist knowledge. On top of that, geopolitical developments continue to disrupt supply chains, with import tariffs on Chinese solar panels being just one example. But, as Wouter explains: “Having our own production line means we can maintain control over both quality and supply security and stay flexible when we need to.”

“Everyone needs a bit of luck”

According to the CEO, successful entrepreneurship is about more than just vision, courage and hard work. One crucial factor is often overlooked: luck. “Everyone needs it. People tend to forget that running a business or investing also comes down to being in the right place at the right time.” A strong product and solid strategy are essential, but success also depends on timing and circumstance. “And those have to work in your favour.” Wouter believes the conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for solar carports: “Nuclear energy, wind farms… these are controversial topics. But solar roofs on car parks? No one argues with that.”

Vision and ambition

To continue its journey, Energy Ports is looking not only for car park owners—whether businesses or public sector organisations—but also for partners with vision and ambition. “We are keen to meet investors who believe in practical, sustainable energy solutions”, says Wouter. This could involve taking a stake in the company or financing a specific project. It might also be an organisation willing to lead by example by running a pilot project, one that is open to experimenting and learning from the process along the way. “A project like that shows what’s possible”, Wouter adds, “and helps others take that first step.”
